JOHNNY COME LATELY
Coal in association with the Royal Exchange Theatre present
AWARD-WINNING THEATRE COMPANY RETURN WITH A PROVOCATIVE TALE OF OUTSIDERS
A mother and her adult daughter are living in reduced circumstances, when a mysterious stranger appears on their doorstep, unsettling their already chaotic lives.
This is a brutal and alarming tale of lives colliding on the edge of a precipice... a clash of cultures, shoplifting, lottery tickets and revolutionary acts!

A poetic fusion of comedy, surrealism and tragedy, award-winning Manchester theatre company Coal return to The Studio to create an engaging and enthralling production in collaboration with John Wright (co-founder Told By An Idiot).

‘Walks a fine line between comedy and a far darker place.’ The Scotsman (THE FRAGILITY OF X)

'Surrealism, physical comedy and social comment all slide into view, brilliantly written comedy with a dark and twisted heart'. Metro (NOT WITH THAT HAND)

FREE FOLLOW UP WORKSHOPS FOR SCHOOLS AUDIENCES OF JOHNNY COME LATELY!

Workshop 1: Making The Whole Thing Up – A workshop in devising
(Suitable for Drama Students – GCSE, A/S or A level students – Key Stages 4 and 5)

This workshop will introduce and explore a range of preparations, exercises, tools and games for creating theatre. Using a variety of methods used to create Johnny Come Lately – we will equip the participants with useful ways to generate material for performance.

This is a physical, playful work, but can be easily adapted for all levels of physical ability/disability.

Workshop 2: Looking In From The Outside
(Suitable for GCSE Key Stage 4 Citizenship)

This workshop will use a range of games and exercises to open up the theme of the play, including belonging, xenophobia, bullying, boundaries and life journeys.  We will also look at how these situations are presented in various media including theatre.
This will be a lively, “up on your feet” workshop, to provoke further investigation and discussion of these thorny subjects.

Both workshops will be led by Annie Fitzmaurice - performer, deviser and co-founder of Coal - who regularly teaches workshops for theatre practitioners, colleges, schools and community arts projects. Annie is also a regular collaborator with Told By An Idiot and leads many of their workshops for students and professionals.

Both workshops are available FREE to schools in Greater Manchester who purchase tickets for parties of 15 or more (proof of ticket purchase will be required). Please note that these are follow up workshops and seeing the production is required for participation.

A maximum number of workshop participants is 30, and at least one member of school staff will be required to be present throughout the workshop.

These workshops are available between 19th November and 7th December inclusive.
