'Stylistically, George Farquhar's martial masquerade sits somewhere
between the harsh heartlessness of the Restoration and the sentimental middle-class comedy
perfected by Sheridan. Braham Murray's new production pays homage to both traditions...the
Exchange fields a splendidly promising company with tried and tested comic actors
supported by a young cast without a weakness...Haydn Gwynne...a stylish performance of
intelligence and sensitivity. As Plume, Greg Wise...combines the right degree of
raffishness with an unsentimental good nature that leaves no doubt as to his integrity.
Matilda Ziegler...makes Melinda both sulky and charming...Emil WolkÕs Brazen is a perky
little cocksparrow given to broad physical humour, clownish tumbling rather than satirical
comment...Derek Griffiths...very funny when imitating the German fortune teller...in full
spate he will doubtless be hilarious.'
