'There is much to laugh at and much to weep over in this sprawling,
finely-detailed production by the author himself. The language is as ripe and ribald as
Chaucer and a deal more explicit. It is often funny too. Northern club favourite Bernard
Wrigley is in splendid form as a laconic neighbourhood guide and Matthew Dunster, Polly
Hemingway and Robin Weaver shine in a busy, multi-talented cast.'
Gerry Dempsey Daily Express
'Cartwright has had the Millstone pub set up in the surrounding space
(design Laurie Dennett) and makes excellent use of the auditorium, notably with Polly
Hemingway's Marion stretching like a gargoyle from the gallery, and John Lloyd Fillingham
careening drunkenly round the banquettes.'
Jeffrey Wainwright The Independent
'...a production which is superbly designed in one of the Exchange's
best sets and illuminated by some excellent performances. Polly Hemingway is simply
brilliant in a handful of roles. There are superb performances, too, from Matthew Dunster,
Robin Weaver and Sara Sugarman.....a theatrical experience not to be missed.'
