Mrs Warren's Profession
by Bernard Shaw
directed by Helena Kaut-Howson

31 May - 1 July 2000

Miss Vivie Warren is a thoroughly modern young woman. She has rejected the traditional trappings of femininity for a university education and a professional career. But now her distant and mysterious mother, Mrs Warren, is coming to stay, trailing a string of admirers in her wake. The two women’s lives will never be the same once this most curious of mothers reveals some extremely shocking news.

Mrs Warren’s Profession is both a searing examination of power and oppression, and a piercing attack on piety and self interest. Shaw’s thrilling play, one of his three scintillating social dramas he called Plays Unpleasant, is as relevant today as when it was first published in 1894.
