Winners Announced For Schools' Bunting Competition

Bunting

In September 2012, the Royal Exchange Theatre launched a competition for school pupils from all over Greater Manchester to create props for our exciting new production of RATS’ TALES by Carol Ann Duffy.

As part of the production, RATS’ TALES Designer Anna Fleischle has created an exciting and breathtaking space in which the audience are taken on a thrilling journey into new and mysterious adaptations of folk stories from around the world. Towards the end of the play, during the story of The Squire’s Bride, the space will be filled with lengths of celebratory bunting.

Ten secondary, primary and special schools took part in ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ Bunting Competition, and throughout October and November 300 pupils worked hard responding to Carol Ann Duffy’s story The Lost Happy Endings by designing and creating their own triangle of bunting.

The standard of entries was incredibly high and it was clear to everyone at the Royal Exchange how much effort teachers and pupils had put in.

Designer Anna Fleischle (pictured above) said
: "When we started the bunting project I was hoping to get a number of interesting bunting pieces to mix between others which the props department were going to make. When we received the work from schools I was overwhelmed, not just with the skill and dedication the pupils had clearly applied to this work, but also with how much they had clearly thought about the stories and taken on board my images and suggested techniques. Now - instead of using a few handmade bunting pieces amongst a lot of plain ones - we will have 3 bunting stretches of pieces all made by young people. I am so pleased to have such amazing bunting in the show - I could not have wished for better."

The Royal Exchange Theatre would like to thank and congratulate everyone who took part:
- Broadbent Fold Primary School
- Bury CofE High School
- Copley High School
- Heaton School
- Manchester Academy
- Mayfield Primary School
- St. Monica's RC High School
- Whalley Range High School
- Woodhouses Primary School

We are delighted to announce that Anna has selected 196 winning pieces of bunting which will all appear on stage as part of RATS’ TALES, and the standard of work was so impressive that we will be making space for all the entries we received in our specially created Rats' Lair in The Lounge next to Bar Exchange. Well done!!
