When will I hear? You need to send us a stamped, addressed envelope so that we can let you know that your script has arrived safely. Your script needs to reach us before the deadline of April 30th, 2006. We will then inform the writers who have reached the shortlist by the 10th of July 2006 . If you have not been contacted by this date, it will indicate that you have unfortunately not made it on to the shortlist. Because we anticipate a large response to this competition it is not possible to contact everyone individually. Between 10 and 15 plays will be shortlisted. The winners will be announced by the end of September 2006. What is a pseudonym?A pseudonym is a name that isn’t your own. It can be as silly as you like. Why do you need me to enter under a pseudonym? We want the competition to be completely fair, and for everyone to be able to enter, from experienced writers to first-time playwrights. The pseudonym allows complete anonymity, so the only thing we are basing our judgements on are the script, pure and simple. What does my script need to look like?Your script should be typed, and have a front page with its title and your pseudonym on. All pages should be numbered (in a standard computer Word package, this can usually be done by clicking on INSERT, then PAGE NUMBERS. It doesn’t matter where the page numbers appear). You should also include a character list, with the number of characters, and a brief description of each. Your text should be double spaced (click on FORMAT, then PARAGRAPH, then LINE SPACING and select DOUBLE) and printed single-sided. Stage directions can appear in Italics or capital letters. You can choose to set the character name on the left of each speech or above. Your script should be securely bound on the left hand side with a paper fastener. These are supplied with the starter packs. How long should my play be?We are asking for full-length plays. This can mean anything in terms of page numbers, although we will hazard a guess that if your play is under thirty pages you may need to develop it, and if it is over 115 pages, it may benefit from editing. How many characters can I write for? There are no restrictions on cast size. However, characters in the theatre need strong journeys, and you should try to avoid “walkon” parts if you can. Please refer to our Getting Started section for guidelines about characters. Also, you can include “doubling” information in your Character List. What should my play be about?Your play can be about anything you want it to be. Does my play have to be a play for the stage?Yes, we are looking for stageplays. Please refer to our Getting Started section if you are unsure about writing for the theatre. Can I enter a play that has been performed before? No, we are looking for completely original, unperformed plays. Entries will be disallowed if they have been professionally optioned, produced or published. Amateur performances do not apply. Can I enter an adaptation or translation? No, we do not accept adaptations, translations or versions of other pieces of work. How do I contact you? If you have any other questions that we haven’t answered here, you can contact us on bruntwood@royalexchange.co.uk or 0161 615 6765. |
