We are looking for a dynamic theatre-maker to join us on a three-year fixed term full-time contract.

The Royal Exchange Theatre is seeking a new Associate Artistic Director to join us on an exciting journey.  The successful candidate will be able to evolve their creative practice and leadership skillset over a three-year period, and to work closely with Artistic Director Sarah Frankcom and the Programming and Creative Learning and Engagement teams, to assist in developing, leading and delivering our artistic vision. The Associate Artistic Director will also create and make work as an artist in their own right across all our spaces and platforms.

This appointment will be made on merit. But we believe that diversity strengthens and enriches us, and that it is the responsibility of everyone at the Royal Exchange Theatre to make the arts and cultural sector a more diverse and equal place. As Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) and disabled people are currently under-represented here, we particularly encourage and welcome applications from BAME and disabled applicants. We also welcome applications from people with dependents and will consider requests for flexible work arrangements.

Please send your CV, together with an expression of interest statement (1000 words max.), explaining the following:

  • In your view, what is the value and purpose of a regional theatre in the 21st century?
  • Give us an insight into your principles and practice as an artist, and what stimulates you to make work (with examples)
  • What excites you about the opportunity to have a tenure with the Royal Exchange Theatre and a relationship with Manchester?
