This one-week course will comprise of a series of workshops led by staff from across the Royal Exchange Theatre Company and will cover areas such as Sound, Lighting, Wardrobe, Stage Management, Front of House and much more. Towards the end of week you will put all you have learnt into practice, working behind the scenes, creating a production.
During the week, you will have the opportunity to see a professional production at the Royal Exchange Theatre, and achieve your Bronze Arts Award. For more information on Arts Award click here.
We have two BEHIND THE SCENES WORK WEEK’S during an academic year:
BTSWW: AGE 16-19 - anyone aged between 16 and 19 who is not in Year 11 or studying at degree level. (If you are in Year 11 at school or studying at degree level you are NOT eligible to apply.)
BTSWW: AGE 14-16 - anyone who is in Year 10 or Year 11 is eligible to apply for the week.
Before applying to take part, please make sure that you can commit to attending all five days (10am-4:30pm). It is also essential that you gain permission from your parents/carers if you are under the age of 18 years. All the sessions will take place at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester city centre.
We recruit once a year, usually in September / October for of the both BEHIND THE SCENES WORK WEEK opportunities that are available in that academic year. The application consists of an online form (including reference) and a short video (Max 3 mins) of you explaining why you’d like to be part of the week.
Your video (max 3mins) is an opportunity for you to tell us about yourself and why you want to be considered for the week. If you’re not sure what to talk about, why not answer some of the questions below:
• Do you have any experience of working behind the scenes in theatre before? If so, tell us about the performances and events that you were involved with. Tell us what your role was and what you learnt from it.
• If you haven’t got any experience of working behind the scenes in theatre, please don’t worry. Instead, why not tell us about other experiences you have had that has led you to want to apply for this work experience opportunity?
• Why do you want to apply for Behind The Scenes Work Week? What do you hope to learn from the week? Are there any specific backstage areas that you are particularly interested in learning more about?
• Finally, why not tell us how you see your future? Do you want to work in the theatre industry? What job do you want? Do you want to work in another industry? How would this experience help you with your preparation for that?
We are not recruiting on the quality of the video. The video does not need to be high-tech, we are interested in hearing about you, so a simple to-camera address is perfect and can be created on your phone. Please upload either a YouTube or Vimeo link to your application so we can view your video. If your Youtube or Vimeo link is set as ‘private’ please ensure that we have access to it.
Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee a place on BEHIND THE SCENES WORK WEEK to everybody who applies. We aim to select those who we feel will benefit the most from the experience. We will be looking for a balanced mix of young people from different areas of Greater Manchester. Because we are funded by Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), we will prioritise young people who live within the Greater Manchester districts.
BEHIND THE SCENES WORK WEEK has been designed in response to the large number of requests that we receive for school and college work experience opportunities, unfortunately we are unable to accommodate work experience outside of these weeks.
We will add everyone who has applied for the BEHIND THE SCENES WORK WEEK to our mailing list and keep in touch about any other projects or opportunities which come up. We would also encourage you to apply again next year.
