THE FUTURE OF THE THEATRE
A STATEMENT FROM OUR EXECUTIVE TEAM: ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE CLOSES ITS STAGES UNTIL AUTUMN 2020
The Royal Exchange has a long-standing commitment to new writing for the stage. During the theatre’s history, we have produced over 130 new plays in our Theatre, Studio and on tour. We have worked with various writers at different stages in their career, including Simon Stephens, Vivienne Franzmann, Matthew Dunster and Rona Munro.
Our Literary & New Writing Department is managed by the New Writing Associate Suzanne Bell. As well as managing the New Writing & Literary Department, Suzanne also oversees the Royal Exchange Theatre's engagement with playwrights. Playwrights come to our attention in a variety of ways and the New Writing Associate's role is to support and develop artists with the scope and ambition to fill our unique spaces.
The Company believes that new work is what keeps theatre alive and that the new play is the most direct and exciting way for the stage to make sense of the modern world. In partnership with property company, Bruntwood, our Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting is Britain’s biggest playwriting competition and celebrates its tenth year in 2015.
