Join us for these free workshops and help us make an exhibition of your ideas for the Royal Exchange you want to see.

We'll be encouraging you to redesign the Exchange (if you want to!), the Hall, the programme, the work in communities, the vibe. We'll be looking at what it would mean to turn the Exchange into a Fun Palace. You might write your ideal programme of plays, draw a map of the Hall as you'd like it to look, design a new theatre space or a project to take onto the streets...

And don't worry if you feel like you can't draw or write. There'll be some theatre artists in the room to help, and remember the motto of FUN PALACES is Everyone an Artist. Everyone a Scientist...

National Fun Palaces weekend is 3rd and 4th October. We're going to create an exhibition of your ideas in the Lounge at the theatre for this weekend, and there will be free drop in workshops on the 4th, for all the family.

This project will be led by the Royal Exchange's Director of Engagement Amanda Dalton, and Theatre Designer Amanda Stoodley, whose previous designs for the Exchange include HAMLET, BLACK ROSES, TWO, WINTERLONG, TRUTH ABOUT YOUTH FESTIVAL and MAKING AN EXHIBITION OF OURSELVES.

YOU, THE AUDIENCE is a year-long collaborative adventure with Royal Exchange audiences of all ages. We want to explore the special relationship between the building we inhabit, the work we make and the people we make it with and for.

FUN PALACES are free, welcoming, annual events held across the country, combining arts and sciences, made for an with local people. The Fun Palace campaign is an ongoing movement for culture at the heart of our communities. The idea was conceived by theatre director Joan Littlewood and architect Cedric Price in the early 1960s. They described a Fun Palace as a 'laboratory of fun' and a 'university of the streets.'
