Following last year’s hugely successful Elders Exchange Day, the Royal Exchange Theatre will once again host a celebration of older people as makers and artists.
Elders Exchange Day is part of National Older People’s Day and the Age of Creativity Festival (1-14 October) - England’s second nationwide festival celebrating older people.
Elders Exchange Day will be a celebration of older people as makers and artists.
The Royal Exchange will be buzzing with workshops, performances, discussions and activity. All events are free (some drop-in but others require advanced booking). Everyone is welcome to drop into our building at any point between 11am and 5pm to see what is happening, take part or join the conversation.

SILVER CIRCUS PERFORMANCE: 11am - 11:30am (THEATRE)
SKYLIGHT CIRCUS ARTS WORKSHOP *: 11:45am - 1:15pm (THEATRE)
Rochdale’s Skylight Circus Arts present their Silver Circus group in action and then lead a beginners’ circus workshop.
ELDERS IMPROVISE *: 11am - 12:30pm (FRONT ROOM)
Fun introduction to improvisation with associate artistic director Bryony Shanahan.
ELDERS WRITE *: 11am - 12:30pm and repeated 1:45pm - 3:15pm (EXCHANGE SUITE)
Creative writing session with writer Ian Townsend.
The morning and afternoon session will be the same, so please book for one only.
AGEING PROVOCATEUR: 12pm - 1pm (THE RIVALS CAFE)
Café conversation into Twitter conversation with Manchester’s Big Theatre podcast presenter Joe Gilmour Rees.
WAI YIN ELDERS: 1:15pm - 1:45pm (THE RIVALS CAFE)
Tai Chi demonstration.
ELDERS MOVE...*: 1:45pm - 3:15pm (FRONT ROOM)
Fun introduction to movement with dance artists Diane Amans.
WHO CARES?! PERFORMANCE (followed by discussion with the company): 2pm - 3pm (THEATRE)
Who Cares?! is an original piece of music theatre created by Tameside’s Hearts and Minds Theatre Comany - an over 60s music and drama group, led by theatre maker Paul Hine and composer Andy Smith.
ELDERS MAKERS PERFORMANCES (followed by discussion with the company): 3:15pm - 4:30pm (THEATRE)
Members of the Royal Exchange Elders Company 2017/18 have graduated to making their own work. Three pieces created during an intensive week of rehearsals will explore themes and styles as broad as comedy, communication and death.
TENOR FROM TAMESIDE: 4:30pm - 5pm (THE RIVALS CAFE)
Hear Allan Joshua sing well-known classics.
Throughout the day Whitworth Handmade on Tour Arts activity in the Great Hall and Sonder Radio will broadcast live between 12-3pm.
