YOUNG COLLECTIVE IS OUR BRAND NEW MEMBERSHIP SCHEME WHICH GIVES YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 14-21 OPEN-ACCESS TO WORKSHOPS AT THE ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE.

Workshops range from performing, technical theatre, digital content, producing, directing, writing and design. All of which will be delivered via ZOOM bringing creativity and fun to your house! Once you become a member, you'll be able to take part in as many workshops as you like. Online are free to attend.
Later in the year we will also be hosting in person week-long projects which will be at a fee.

Your membership will allow you access to our workshops, which are stand-alone and available termly. Membership is £10 for the rest of this academic year (31st August 2021).

Financial support to help with membership/workshop fees and travel costs is available through our Arts Pot scheme. Applications to the Arts Pot can be made once you have joined to become a member.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS:

Exploring a Character with Kayleigh Hawkins - Monday 12 April, 3:00pm - 6:00pm
In this workshop we will look at how we can build with and beyond the information a playwright has given us in the text, to create three-dimensional, believable characters who can inhabit the world of the play. We will look at visualisation, improvisation and character exercises that can open up our imaginations and enable us to invent truthful and interesting characters and begin to embody that in performance.

PLAY READING CLUB with Isah-Levi Roach - Tuesday 27 April, 5:00pm - 7:00pm
As part of the Young Collective 2021 programme we’re running a monthly Play Reading Club. These sessions will be a chance to explore a new play text every month through a 2 hour session. You will get chance to discuss the plays, read some scenes and share your thoughts and opinions amongst a group. You should read the play in advance so you can fully participate in the session. 

The next session will be Tuesday 27 April, 5:00pm - 7:00pm and the play we will be discussing will be: MOGADISHU by Vivian Franzman

Plays will be issued one week before the session. For anyone who joins after this, you will be issued the play after your booking.

Facilitating Online Workshop with Josie Hepplewhite - Tuesday 4 May, 5:00pm - 7:00pm
AwaitingWhat does it mean to be a facilitator? How can I develop skills to plan and deliver workshops that are fun, engaging and inclusive? This workshop will explore these questions and will offer you practical tools, focusing on how you can use your own experience and skills to develop as facilitator both in person and online.

Poetry / Spoken Word with Testament - Thursday 13 May, 5:00pm - 7:00pm 
Spoken Word, Rap and Poetry in Theatre
Explore the use of different poetic forms in theatre with rapper, poet and playwright Testament. Int he workshop we’ll play with they way heightened language and forms can to tell story and transcend a moment.

Acting for Camera with Chris Brett - Saturday 22 May, 3:00pm - 5:00pm

Adapt your acting skills for working on camera! This workshop will give you an introduction to working on screen, exploring skills and techniques to help you stand out and get the best out of your performances on this platform. You will build up a tool kit to help you when approaching scripts for screen and explore performing for camera so you can be confident working in this exciting medium!

Creating a Character with Andy Sheridan - Tuesday 25 May, 5:00pm - 7:00pm

I’m not into normal. Normal is boring. It’s boring in everyday life, and it’s ultra-boring onstage. Join Bruntwood Play Prize Winner, Andy Sheridan, for a couple of hours to explore and discover the tools and techniques to banish the ordinary. Theatre should be astonishing. Your plays and characters should be too.

Tuesday 23 February 2021, 5:00pm - 7:00pm
PLAY READING CLUB with Isah-Levi Roach
As part of the Young Collective 2021 programme we’re running a monthly Play Reading Club. These sessions will be a chance to explore a new play text every month through a 2 hour session. Wednesday 03 March 2021, 5:00pm - 7:00pm 
Stanislavski Acting Technique with Hannah Sands
Stanislavski's methods guide actors to put themselves in the place of the character, by giving them an understanding of a character’s motivations, obstacles and objectives. In this practical workshop, we will try these tools out for ourselves to see if they can help us build "believable characters”. 

Saturday 13 March 2021, 12:00pm - 2:00pm
Demystifying Devising with Kate Colgrave-Pope
“There is no formula to the way we make theatre... It starts with an itch, a need, an instinct...” EMMA RICE. 
This workshops will celebrate the wonderful and many possibilities of how we can devise and create a story. And share some fundamental tools with you that will enable you to begin to experiment  with how you can build that story into a confidant and exciting piece of theatre. 

Wednesday 17 March 2021, 5:00pm - 7:00pm
Working with Text/Script with Atri Banerjee
You’re an actor and you’ve just been given your script! What do you need to first think about when preparing a play? In this workshop you will learn about how to approach a script and the skills and techniques needed to go into a rehearsal room equipped and ready to start.

Introduction to the World of Sound with Matthew Simms
Don't know your EQs from your Microphones? Take your first steps in the weird and wonderful world of sound; learn how we create, capture and manipulate audio to bring the Royal Exchange Theatre to life

Performing a Monologue with Sean Linnen
Applying for drama school? Or just fancy trying out a new speech? Director Sean Linnen leads an in-depth workshop on all things monologues - including advice on what to choose, how to approach them and a practical toolkit for bringing them to life.


Performing Comedy with Chris Brett
An introduction to comedy performance workshop. Learn improvisation and joke writing skills and how comedy is a serious business! Join in an improv comedy contest, learning how to think on your feet, build up your improvisation skills and use stimuli as a starting point for crafting jokes. You will also learn how to apply your acting skills to performing comedy


Directing New Writing with Laurence Young
This workshop will explore a director's relationship to new writing, taking in aspects of dramaturgy and development, giving notes, and staging. We'll talk about the development of some contemporary British plays, and the many different ways new writing can be developed.

Introduction to playwriting with Anna Spearpoint
In this session we will play games, do some simple exercises, and have discussions to help us learn about the life of a playwright and how to take your ideas from something that lives inside your mind, to being on a page and, eventually, a stage. We'll talk about developing ideas, creating characters, building a story, and writing dialogue - all valuable tools for your further creative life, be that as a writer, performer, or theatre maker. 

An Introduction to Theatre Costume with Tracy Dunk
Costumes are an important visual tool for telling stories and creating characters.Come and find out about Costume Design, Interpretation and Creation at the Royal Exchange Theatre. See Costumes and Designs from a wide repertoire of productions such as Wuthering Heights, The Skriker, Death of a Salesman, Frankenstein, Guys and Dolls, Jubilee , Scuttlers and The Nightwatch.

PREVIOUS PROJECTS

WRITER'S ROOM
MONDAY 15 - FRIDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2021, 10:00am - 2:00pm

As part of our 2021 Young Collective Programme, we are delivering a week-long Writer’s Room from Monday 15 February – Friday 19 February , 10:00am – 2:00pm each day on Zoom.

During this course, you will meet each morning for a week with a professional writer to learn and develop writing skills for stage. You will learn about research, character, form, structure and dialogue and put these skills into practice as you work towards creating a short play by the end of the week.

The Writer’s Room is open to young people of all experiences. You don’t have to have written anything before. You just need a willingness to learn and enthusiasm for putting pen to paper (or fingers to keys!)!

This course is led by professional playwright Sonia Jalaly. Sonia is a writer and theatre maker from Manchester. She has devised and written work for theatres across the UK with both professional artists and young people. Sonia is currently under commission with HighTide and the Royal Exchange Theatre
