The Royal Exchange Theatre offers two weeks of work experience opportunities throughout the academic year: one aimed at 14 - 16 year olds (June/July) and the other aimed at 16 - 19 year olds (January).
Applications for our June/July BEHIND THE SCENES WORK WEEK have now closed. We will be opening up applications in July for young people aged 16-19, to take place January 2021.
If you're interested in getting involved with The Royal Exchange Theatre and are wanting to learn theatre making skills, our Young Collective might be of interest to you.
This one-week course will comprise of a series of workshops led by staff from across the Royal Exchange Theatre Company and will cover areas such as Sound, Lighting, Wardrobe, Stage Management, Front of House and much more. Towards the end of week you will put all you have learnt into practice, working behind the scenes, creating a production.
During the week, you will have the opportunity to see a professional production at the Royal Exchange Theatre, and achieve your Bronze Arts Award. For more information on Arts Award click here.
We have two BEHIND THE SCENES WORK WEEK’S during an academic year:
BTSWW: AGE 16-19 - anyone aged between 16 and 19 who is not in Year 11 or studying at degree level. (If you are in Year 11 at school or studying at degree level you are NOT eligible to apply.)
BTSWW: AGE 14-16 - anyone who is in Year 10 or Year 11 is eligible to apply for the week.
Before applying to take part, please make sure that you can commit to attending all five days (10am-4:30pm). It is also essential that you gain permission from your parents/carers if you are under the age of 18 years. All the sessions will take place at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester city centre.
Due to our funding requirements, we prioritise entry for young people from Greater Manchester districts – Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. This means the majority of places are offered to people who live in these districts.
We recruit in September for our January week and again in the new year for our Summer week. The application consists on an online application form which should take no longer than 5 minutes to fill out. We may then also contact your reference prior to offering you a place on the week.
Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee a place on BEHIND THE SCENES WORK WEEK to everybody who applies. We aim to select those who we feel will benefit the most from the experience. We will be looking for a balanced mix of young people from different areas of Greater Manchester. Because we are funded by Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), we will prioritise young people who live within the Greater Manchester districts.
