AN UPDATE FROM THE ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE

The Government have announced plans for theatres to reopen on 1 August. We feel relieved by this easing of lockdown but we know that gearing up to opening our doors again is going to be much more complicated than before. In light of this, we won’t be opening for now.

When we do reopen, it is essential that we do so in a safe and controlled way. We are learning so much about how we will do this onstage, backstage and for all of our public spaces. Our talented teams have been furloughed since March and the practicalities of creating, producing, building, rehearsing and realising a production takes a huge amount of resource and time. Coupled with that, socially distanced theatre is a huge challenge in our current financial model. The decision to open can only be taken when it is safe, when we can be inclusive and when it is financially viable for us.

Many of you might know that we are going through quite a difficult time as a company, but we feel optimistic about the future. We are even more committed to creating the best artistic experiences and offering our communities great moments of connection with a full range of ticket prices and accessibility. We want you to feel confident and comfortable when you return.

Our hearts are swelling with the overwhelming amount of support so many of you have given us: the donations, keeping ticket money with us on credit, writing to MPs, staying connected with our digital work, and even just tweeting your support. Thank you!

We’re looking forward to being able to share some exciting ideas with you in the near future.
