ONE FOR THE ROAD is a community-led project exploring the people and stories you might find right here on your road in Tameside.

Over the past months, LOCAL EXCHANGE has worked alongside local creatives and residents to shape this special final performance at Victoria Market Hall, Stalybridge.

Set within the historic surroundings of the Market Hall, ONE FOR THE ROAD celebrates both the building’s architectural heritage and the vibrant voices of the community today. Together, we’ve created a space where different ideas and art forms come together – with and for the people of Tameside.

ONE FOR THE ROAD is not an ending, but a moment of gathering – a concluding act before the next journey begins.

What will One For the Road be like?

ONE FOR THE ROAD is a site-specific piece of immersive theatre, cocreated with our cast of local Tameside residents.

Led by our narrator-figure Duncan, you will be invited to walk around the space exploring creative installations – different corners of Victoria Market Hall decorated with set – where you will encounter characters from our fictional Road. Some of the play will be experienced through headphones, provided on site.

What is site-specific theatre?

Site-specific theatre is a performance created for and staged in a unique, non-traditional location—such as a warehouse, historical site, or public park—rather than a conventional theatre. The site is key to the production, shaping the story, atmosphere, and audience experience, often making the location a “character” in the show.

Instead of taking place on a conventional stage ONE FOR THE ROAD will be performed across Victoria Market Hall. As an audience you will be guided to walk through the space meeting our characters along the way. Please note, this means there will not be standard theatre seating available.

What is immersive theatre?

In immersive theatre, you are immersed in the action. The divide between the audience and the performer, the stage and the seating, is removed. Instead, immersive theatre is an interactive experience where you are not only an audience member but an active participant. You are deeply involved in the story. – PUNCHDRUNK THEATRE

In ONE FOR THE ROAD you will be invited to explore immersive elements of the story through headphones, offering an intimate experience stories and soundscapes from our road.

Can I bring children and young people?

The show has a general age rating of 14+.

ONE FOR THE ROAD explores the hopes and fears of our society in times of economic hardship. Characters speak about complex themes including, racism, sexism, mental health and poverty. The show is made up of a mix of poetic narration and monologues from individual characters. There are 3 monologues which directly reference themes inappropriate for children under the age of 14. However, for the duration of those 3 monologues children can remove their headphones. We would recommend the show for children under the age of 8.

While the play deals with complex themes and issues they are held in a tones of hope, anger, and connection, rather than misery.

Content Warnings:

Direct reference to knife crime, suicide, mental health, debt, racism.

Inference to sexual assault, terrorism.
