Founder, trustee/director of the Royal Exchange Theatre dies.

We're sad to report the death of G Laurence Harbottle, a founder trustee/director of the 69 Theatre Company Limited, which later became the Royal Exchange Theatre Company – beginning in March 1968.

He stood down as director and chair in October 1983.

Laurence Harbottle was the founder and former senior partner of legal firm Harbottle & Lewis, and tirelessly championed the theatre industry, charities and the arts, both professionally and personally. He held positions as chair of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Theatres Trust, Central School of Drama, and Theatre Centre, and was president of Theatrical Management Association. He also established the Peggy Ramsay Foundation with Simon Callow.
