This month we have welcomed 130 young people into the theatre as they begin 12 months in residency with us. Aged 14 -25 they will develop their skills as a company of communicators, directors, facilitators, performers, producers, technicians and writers.
9 Creatives (comprising directors, facilitators and producers)
Over the year we will keep them busy, help them to harness their passion and hone their skills at the heart of the Royal Exchange.
99 skills sessions
8 Company Nights where they will see all our main house shows for free
7 Master-classes with creative teams
4 performance projects including a studio show, pop up plays and an intergenerational piece with The Elders
3 whole company meetings
2 Open Space events where they can make their own work
The launch event gave them the opportunity to meet each other, learn more about the year ahead and to take part in a panel discussion about ‘Starting Points’.
Matt Hassall, our Young Company Director, was joined by Exchange Artistic Director Sarah Frankcom and Chief Executive Mark Dobson alongside Cherylee Houston (Coronation Street actress), David Judge (writer in residence with Talawa), Kellie Smith (Pearson Playwright in residence), Mark Distin-Webster (Lighting Designer) and Rachel Austion (performer including BLACK ROSES) to answer questions from Young Company members and offer advice at the start of this new year.
With questions ranging from ‘What’s the most memorable opening of a show?’ to ‘What advice would you give your younger self?’ The panellists were happy to share their experiences and thoughts with the 130 strong audience, advice ranged from be brave, bold and ask lots of questions to try lots of new things and use lots of post it notes!
You can also watch Young Company members talking about their experience in this film made by our Young Communicators alongside film maker Annie Woodson.
