The Royal Exchange Theatre has been bringing the world’s most powerful stories to life for nearly 50 years.

In 1976 our intimate and radical theatre was created placing the audience at the heart of the on-stage action, creating a unique exchange between artists and audience and a space in which the city could be reflected back on itself. Now our distinctive theatre is Manchester’s leading producing house, supporting artists and freelancers, championing new writing via incredible schemes like the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting and placing communities at our centre through the delivery of Local Exchange – our ambitious and long-term programme that sees the theatre take up residency in communities across Greater Manchester.

As a registered charity no. 255424, the generous support of individuals, businesses and charitable trusts makes a huge difference to all of the work we do, both on and off our stages. If you love what we do, why not get involved?
