O time, thou must untangle this, not I. It is too hard a knot for me t’untie.
Washed up on the shores of Illyria after a ship-wreck, Viola hides her true identity by disguising herself as a man. Finding a job – and love – at the court of Duke Orsino, Viola becomes muddled in mistaken identities when her disguise begins to cause more problems than it solves.
With some of Shakespeare’s most popular characters caught up in this outrageous tale of misadventure, join Malvolio, Maria and Feste as they argue, drink and trick their way through the wild world of Illyria.
The Royal Exchange will be filled with musical madness as Shakespeare’s rowdy comedy tackles questions of gender, identity, love and loneliness.

★★★★ The Stage
"Charming and joyous production that has a genuine feel for the play’s underlying gender issues"
★★★★ The Guardian
"Opera director Jo Davies’ musical mastery shines through in a production made all the more absorbing by its gender-fluid casting"
★★★★ The Telegraph
"The most striking stroke lies in the casting of transgender cabaret artiste Kate O’Donnell as Feste...encapsulating a world of migration, change, losses, pains and gains. Happy 453rd birthday for this Sunday, Bard - they’ve done you proud."
★★★★★ Northern Soul
"During a time when we’re feeling lost and uncertain, Shakespeare’s words resonate. The Exchange has done a sterling job with Twelfth Night, given it a modern context and pulled it head-first into 2017."
