How can we create truthful characters for performance?

In this workshop, we will use facts about fictional characters as a spring-board for imaginative work, allowing us to create personal and unique interpretations of characters.

We will explore how we can inhabit characters with our body and voice, and how characters might interact with each other and exist in different scenarios.

Using selected scenes from the play ‘Sweat’ by Lynn Nottage, we will explore text analysis and how to use this to work practically, acting in the scenes and receiving direction.

Professional performers need to train, and look after, their voice to keep up with the demands of a theatre job.

In this workshop, we will use practical exercises to experiment with our individual vocal range, explore resonators and learn techniques to continue practicing independently.

This workshop will explore how we can use our imagination to bring truth to on-stage life.

How can we work with physical objects to endow them with imagined properties?

How can we use our imagination to create circumstances that audiences will believe in, and imagine with us?

Objective: what a character wants

Obstacle: whats in a character’s way, stopping them from getting what they want. In this workshop, we will look at the key components of drama: objective and obstacle.

We will use games, exercises and scenes to explore how we can play objectives, identify obstacles, and use tactics to try to overcome our obstacles.

One way of looking at scenes is looking at the status changes between characters.

Some characters may play high status, some low, and they may also try to raise or lower another character’s status in a scene. We will delve into the world of ‘playing status’, using exercises, improvisations and text.

Using selected scenes from the play ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ by Oscar Wilde, we will explore text analysis and how to use this to work practically, acting in the scenes and receiving direction.
