Following an open call out for a storyteller and a sound designer by the Cheetham Hill Ambassadors last month, we are delighted to announce that Gareth Smith and sound designer SHAR have been commissioned to work with the ambassadors to develop a new audio walking show around the streets of Cheetham Hill. The show is a celebration of the Cheetham Hill’s history, its present, and the people that make up this community.

Sound designer SHAR said ‘I am so looking forward to delving into the unheard stories of Cheetham Hill and bringing them to life through this project.’ A Digital Composer, Sound Designer and Multimedia Performer, SHAR writes and produces music for Theatre, Film, Dance and Audio/Visual performance which explores humanity and storytelling through the digital realm. Previous collaborations and commissions have included working with members of Cinematic Orchestra, Manchester International Festival, Royal Exchange Theatre, Contact Theatre and HOME.

Gareth Smith is a spoken word artist who works predominately with electronic and modern classical music, dance and short film. Gareth works within a number of community arts settings including Streetwise Opera, Theatre in Prison Project, and established the Brunswick Men’s Group and Ardwick Creative Network. Recent works include; 55N, 5E (Outer Reaches 2021), Vanishing (Tombed Visions 2017) and Tales from the Bleached Chameleon (Fanfare Records 2019).

Over the next couple of months, and guided by the Ambassadors, Gareth and SHAR will meet and interview community groups, these stories will form the narrative of the piece. The show will be created from landmarks, local stories and the eclectic voices of this diverse and vibrant community, and will open this summer – so watch this space!

Cheetham Hill Ambassador Poppy says this of Gareth and SHAR joining the team…
'We welcome Gareth and Charlotte to our Royal Exchange family.
Together we'll work
to spread the word
of this diverse part of the world
we call Cheetham Hill.

We will capture the stories
of then and now.
The noise the sounds
the hustle and bustle
imagine it wow!!
It will blow your mind.'
